Causes and Symptoms of Dry Mouth Syndrome

A dry mouth is a side effect of smoking and certain medications, medical treatments, diseases, infections. Drugs used to treat everything from allergies to psychotic disorders can dry out the mouth. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments of the neck and head may damage salivary glands, reducing saliva production. Medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and strokes may have the side effect of drying out the mouth.
